<EDIT>: I'll withdraw my original answer. I searched for a while and could not find the pages referenced below, but they're obviously out there. The answers below are certainly more accurate!

The previous answer is not accurate. If you have enough miles, American Airlines' AAdvantage program will look for reward travel availability on AA and one of it's One World partners, such as Qantas, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific or other airline.

Your 2nd answer is right, you can call AAdvantage and hopefully they can find a flight to Papeete on one of their One World partner airlines if American doesn't fly there which I don't believe they do. The only problem is that it's getting very hard to book award travel at the times you want these days and usually need to be booked way in advance. The AAdvantage phone number should be on the back of your frequent flyer card and on the aa.com website. I've accumulated almost one million miles as a AA frequent flyer and every time I redeemed my miles was on a One World partner airline other than American Airlines. Just give them a call, that's the best way to find out whether the flights you want are available.
